For many people, the biggest question about acupuncture is simple: is it safe? When performed by a properly trained and licensed practitioner, acupuncture has a strong safety record. Here is what to know.
Sterile, Single-Use Needles
Acupuncture needles are sterile, used once and then discarded in a medical sharps container. They are solid and very thin, far thinner than the hollow needles used for injections or blood draws.
Licensing in Florida
In Florida, acupuncturists are licensed by the Florida Board of Acupuncture and carry the title Acupuncture Physician (AP). Licensure requires formal education and passing national board examinations. You can look up any practitioner's license on the Florida Department of Health website.
Possible Side Effects
Side effects are usually mild and short-lived:
- Slight soreness or a small bruise where a needle was placed
- Feeling relaxed, sleepy or a little light-headed after treatment
- Temporary marks from cupping or gua sha, which fade within days
Tell Your Practitioner If You:
- Are pregnant or trying to conceive
- Take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder
- Have a pacemaker or other implanted device
- Have diabetes, a skin condition or a weakened immune system
