Patients often ask whether they should have "regular" acupuncture or electroacupuncture. Both use the same fine, sterile needles. The difference is how the points are stimulated.
Traditional Acupuncture
In traditional acupuncture, thin needles are placed at specific points and left in place, sometimes with gentle manual turning. It is used for a very wide range of concerns, from pain to stress, sleep, digestion and women's health.
Electroacupuncture
With electroacupuncture, small clips connect pairs of needles to a device that sends a mild electrical pulse between them. It does not feel like an electric shock. Most people describe a light tapping, buzzing or pulsing sensation. We adjust the intensity until it feels comfortable.
Electroacupuncture provides steady, consistent stimulation, which is why it is often chosen for:
- Back pain and sciatica
- Peripheral neuropathy and nerve pain
- Sports injuries and muscle strains
- Recovery after auto and work injuries
Which One Is Right for Me?
Many treatments combine both: some points are stimulated electrically while others are left alone. Your practitioner will recommend an approach based on your condition, sensitivity and how you respond.
Who Should Avoid Electroacupuncture?
Electroacupuncture is not used for people with pacemakers or other implanted electrical devices, and it is used with caution in pregnancy and for people with seizure disorders. Tell us about any devices or conditions before treatment.
