If you have never had acupuncture before, it is natural to have questions. Will it hurt? What should I wear? How long does it take? Here is what a first visit at our Orlando and Altamonte Springs clinics usually looks like.
Before Your Visit
- Call us first. We offer a free consultation and will verify your insurance benefits before you come in.
- Eat a light meal. Avoid coming in very hungry or right after a heavy meal.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing that can be rolled up above the knees and elbows.
- Bring a list of your medications and supplements.
The Consultation
Your practitioner will ask about your main concern, your health history, sleep, digestion, stress and energy. In Chinese medicine, these details help us understand the whole picture, not just the symptom that brought you in. We may also look at your tongue and check your pulse.
The Treatment
Acupuncture needles are sterile, single-use and very thin, much thinner than a needle used for a shot. Most people feel a brief pinch, followed by a dull ache, warmth or heaviness around the point. Needles usually stay in for 20 to 30 minutes while you rest. Many patients fall asleep.
Depending on your needs, your treatment may also include electroacupuncture, cupping, heat therapy or gua sha. We will explain each one before we begin.
After Your Session
Most people feel relaxed, and some feel a little tired or light-headed for a short time. Drink water, avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day, and notice how your symptoms change over the next few days. Small, temporary bruises at a needle site can happen and fade quickly.
How Many Visits Will I Need?
It depends on your condition and how long you have had it. Recent problems often need fewer visits, while long-standing conditions usually need a series of treatments. We will suggest a plan and review your progress with you as you go.
