The end of the year is busy, and health appointments are easy to push into January. But if you have health insurance or a flexible spending account, waiting can cost you. November and December are often the best months of the year to schedule acupuncture in Orlando or Altamonte Springs. Here is why, and how to make sure you get the most out of the benefits you have already paid for.

Why the End of the Year Matters

Many health plans run on a calendar year. On January 1, your deductible, your out-of-pocket maximum and any limits on the number of visits usually start over. Some employer plans use a different plan year, so check your plan documents or call your insurer to confirm your reset date.

1. You May Have Already Met Your Deductible

If you had surgery, tests, a hospital visit or ongoing care this year, you may have already paid your full deductible. That often means your plan now pays a bigger share of covered visits, and your cost for acupuncture could be lower now than it will be in January, when the deductible starts over.

2. Unused Visits Usually Do Not Carry Over

Plans that cover acupuncture often allow a set number of visits per year. Visits you do not use by the end of the plan year typically disappear. If your plan includes acupuncture and you have visits left, now is the time to use them.

3. FSA Money Is Often Use-It-or-Lose-It

Acupuncture is generally an eligible medical expense for flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and health savings accounts (HSAs). FSA funds usually have to be spent by the end of the plan year. Some plans offer a short grace period or let you carry over a limited amount, but anything beyond that is lost. HSA money rolls over from year to year, but it is still a tax-advantaged way to pay for care. Ask your plan administrator how your account works.

4. Your Plan or Premiums May Change in January

Open enrollment season often brings new plans, new copays or new rules about which services are covered. If you know your current plan covers acupuncture, using it before a change takes effect means fewer surprises.

5. A Calmer Start to the New Year

The holidays bring travel, long days and less sleep. A few sessions before the year ends can help you head into January feeling better instead of starting the year behind. Read our article on holiday stress and sleep for more.

How to Check Your Benefits

Have your insurance card handy and ask your insurer, or let us ask for you:

  • Does my plan cover acupuncture, and for which conditions?
  • How much of my deductible have I met this year?
  • How many acupuncture visits do I have left, and when do they reset?
  • What is my copay or coinsurance per visit?
  • Do I need a referral or prior authorization?

Our team checks benefits for patients every day. We work with many plans, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna and UnitedHealthcare, and we also see patients through PIP auto insurance and workers' compensation. Book Early, Because Calendars Fill Up

December is one of the busiest months for appointments, and holiday closures shorten the schedule. If you want to fit in several visits before your benefits reset, it helps to start in November. We are open Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 and Saturday from 9 to 12 at both locations:
